Lord Mayor of Dublin opens Book of Condolence for murdered garda Colm Horkan

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon has opened a Book of Condolences for murdered garda Colm Horkan.

Det Garda Horkan was killed while working in the line of duty in Castlerea, Co Roscommon last night

The Lord Mayor opened the online Book of Condolences to allow the people of Dublin to express their sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of the popular detective.

He said: "I was deeply saddened this morning to hear of the death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan who was killed while on duty working to serve and protect the people of Castlerea and Ireland.

"Detective Garda Horkan was a dedicated public servant who had also worked as a retained fire fighter in Charlestown, County Mayo.

"I am opening this Book of Condolence to allow the citizens of Dublin to express their sympathies to the family and colleagues of Detective Garda Horkan. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the Book of Condolence will be available online at  https://bit.ly/RIPGardaHorkan until Tuesday 23 June 2020.

All messages in the book will be printed and presented to the Assistant Garda Commissioner for handover to the family of Detective Garda Horkan.

A murder investigation has been launched following the horror shooting, and gardai have appealed for witnesses.

It's understood Det Garda Horkan got into a struggle with a man who managed to get hold of the garda's official gun before firing 15 shots at the brave garda, who was hit multiple times.

A suspect, in his 40s, has since been arrested in connection with the murder investigation and is being detained at Castlerea Garda Station.

Det Garda Horkan, who was from Charlestown, Co Mayo, had been a member of An Garda Siochana for almost a quarter of a century.
