Lord Mayor of Dublin lights up Mansion House to mark International Overdose Awareness Day

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland lit up the Mansion House to mark International Overdose Awareness Day .

The mayor's house was completely purple to remember those that have died from overdoses.

Gilliland believes that more can be done to prevent overdoses in this country.

She tweeted: "Tonight, I mark International #OverdoseAwarenessDay by lighting @MansionHouseDub in purple to remember those who have passed away due to overdose & to remind us that we can do more to prevent overdose."

Earlier today the Lord Mayor of Dublin launched the 'VanaLiffey'- a mobile harm reduction unit.

The vehicle provides naloxone and training, needle & syringe program and training, rapid access to OST assessments as well as referrals to outreach services.

International Overdose Awareness Day occurs yearly on 31st August.

It aims to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and create positive change.
