Lord Mayor demands additional bins from Dublin City Council after disgusting Portobello scenes show drinking aftermath mayhem

These disgusting pictures show the messy drinking aftermath caused over the weekend in Dublin City Centre.

The beautiful weather brought piles of litter to Dublin's towns, coastal areas and beauty spots on Saturday night including Herbert Park, Phoenix Park and the Portobello area along the Grand Canal.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin thanked the front line Dublin City Council staff who cleaned up the litter this morning.

Ms Chu said: “Saw the photos of rubbish at Portobello, Herbert Park and have asked that wheelie bins or some form of big barrel bins be put in for next weekend.

“Please also bring your rubbish home, a group of locals have started a “leave no trace” campaign in their park and it's been working well.

Dublin Lord Mayor Hazel Chu (Naoise Culhane)

“Also just to say a massive thank you to Dublin City Council’s frontline teams especially the cleaning teams who have to go around the city to spots like Portobello and clean up after the mess.”

Dublin Bay South Fine Gael councillor, James Geoghegan also took to Twitter to speak his thoughts on the problem in Portobello.

He said: “Portobello last night. We have to do a whole lot better. This can’t continue, even in the short term.”

He also shared pictures highlighting the issue as empty cans and bottles of alcohol bombarded the area.

Large numbers of people across the nation have been gathering with friends over the weekend, making the most of the dry weather.

Photographs and videos on social media show little attempts to keep two metres apart or wear face masks in places like St Stephen’s Green in Dublin.

Many Dubliners also flocked to beaches like Howth and Greystones.

Deputy Garda Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon urged the public to enjoy the weather responsibly today.

AA Roadwatch reported heavy traffic and delays on all approaches to Sutton Cross, Clontarf Road and Dollymount Strand.

Malahide Road was said to be slow both ways approaching Northern Cross, there were delays on Old Military Road passing the Hell Fire Club and approaches to Bray and to Glendalough.

Ms McMahon said: “With a good weather forecast this weekend we would ask people to continue to enjoy the outdoors responsibly. Please limit your social contacts.”
