Loose Women viewers clash over whether wedding tradition is outdated or respectful

Loose Women fans have been left split after a debate over a marriage tradition exposed differences in opinion.

Today's panel of Andrea McLean, Nadia Sawalha, Denise Welch and Kaye Adams brought up the topic of proposals - and how a man would traditionally go about it.

They asked if it was "outdated" to follow tradition and seek permission from the bride's father to pop the question.

Nadia was first to speak, coming down firmly on the side of "no."

She told that when her dad had first moved to the UK, he insisted that his daughters make up their own mind and forge their own path.

Nadia claimed that the tradition has no place in today's society - but if others wanted to observe the tradition, it wasn't for her to judge.

Fans were left split over the debate though - many claiming that it's a matter of respect.

"Nadia is making my blood boil," one tweeted, "I find it respectful that my fiance spoke to my dad before proposing!

"My dad will be walking me down the aisle and 'giving me away' because I'm his little girl and I like that tradition. #LooseWomen."

Another agreed, writing: "I would have been really upset if my fiance hadn't asked/told my dad that he wanted to ask me to marry him!

"It may be old fashioned but it's definitely a tradition that I wanted! #LooseWomen."

Some fans said the tradition is too old fashioned (ITV)

Others were having none of it, though.

One raged: "Yes it is outdated to ask permission from a father, daughters don't belong to fathers, women don't belong to men. #LooseWomen."

Another was beside themselves, penning: "Is a guy asking for your hand in marriage even a thing anymore?! My dad wouldn't be the one marrying him so it's irrelevant what he thinks. My life so my decision #LooseWomen."

A third raised a fresh viewpoint: "It is outdated...but then the whole marriage thing is outdated tbh #LooseWomen."
