Loose Women stars call for government to 'shame' those refusing to wear masks in shops

Loose Women's panelists today called for the government to "shame" those refusing to wear masks in shops.

Today on the ITV programme, the stars vented their frustration at people not wearing their masks properly in stores.

New rules, which come into play on July 24, will see face coverings made mandatory in shops.

If you fail to cover your face while visiting a supermarket or High Street shop you may be fined £100.

The law is aimed at stemming the spread of coronavirus, amid fears of a second spike especially once the weather becomes colder.

Coleen addressed wearing a face mask in stores, which she admitted she hated because it makes her feel "claustrophobic".

However, she said that she kept passing people who had pulled their face mask down to their chin.

"Like hundreds of people wearing a beard mask," Coleen said. "I want to say, 'Guys, it's not coming out of your chin!'"

Meanwhile, Janet called for the government to come up with some public health advertising.

"Some messaging which is hard-hitting and makes it shameful not to wear a mask," Janet explained.

She went on to refer to when wearing a seat belt in vehicles became a law.

Janet said: "I remember when people were like, 'Ugh, do I have to?' and then within a shot space of time because of the shocking adverts - and they really were very, very shocking adverts - we were made to feel that if we didn't wear a seat belt we were absolutely doing the wrong thing.

"Looking further back to the AIDS pandemic when they had the tombstone ad - where people said, 'Why are you being so frightening?' - because they needed to get a message across that if people didn't alter their behaviour, more lives would be lost from a disease that they still do not have a cure for."

She described the government's advertising as "being a bit matey" when it came to masks.

"A bit 'We'll all in this together'," she said. "Now is the time to be a bit more hard-hitting and that if you're not wearing a mask it's shameful."

Her co-stars appeared to agree as she continued: "You've just got to change the tone."
