Loose Women star Denise Welch shares 'sadness' and tough moments as Matty Healy's mum

Denise Welch has revealed the sadness she feels over her son Matty Healy.

Matty, who is the frontman of The 1975, has previously been at the centre of controversial headlines. Mirror Online reports how they have included accusations of racism, Islamophobia and misogny.

The 36-year-old was linked to American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift in May this year. The two were rumoured to have been enjoyed a brief affair following her split from British actor Joe Alwyn.

In a new interview, Loose Women star Denise has explained how sad and hard it is being away from Matty while he’s on tour, saying she "misses having him to myself".

The 65-year-old mum-of-two also discussed the moment Matty told her he needed to go to rehab for heroin addiction. She has tackled her own fair share of demons, often discussing how she abused drugs and alcohol.

The former Coronation Street said: "I had to stand back and realise that Matty was the son of an alcoholic, and I had to come to terms with the shame that brought. But Matty said, 'Mum, I wouldn’t be who I am if our house wasn’t a bit of rock’n’roll."

Matty spent seven weeks at a rehab clinic in Barbados in 2017 to treat his heroin addiction and is still in recovery. The lead singer has written openly about his drug use in songs. Although he still drinks alcohol and smokes cigarettes, he no longer uses heroin.

One thing Denise did not speculate on was her son's rumoured romance with pop icon Taylor Swift.
