Loose Women's Kaye Adams and Nadia Sawahla's secret feud fuelled by 'jealousy and rejection'

It was 23 years ago today that Loose Women first aired, with Kaye Adams, Nadia Sawalha, Jane Moore and Karen Brady taking their seats on the panel for the first time.

But despite the banter and hilarity, few knew that behind the scenes tensions were brewing between Kaye, 59, and Nadia, 57, who had taken an instant dislike to each other.

At their first ever meeting, Kaye was disgusted by Nadia's 'weird' toe ring, while Nadia found it irritating that Kaye was holding a huge newspaper.

And both were furious when they found out they would be working together.

It was dislike at first sight for Kaye and Nadia, left, when they were thrown together on Loose Women (@loosewomen/Instagram)

During a discussion on the ITV daytime show about judging people based on first appearances, Kaye said: "My god you're a great example, couldn't stand you when I first saw you."

"I know," agreed Nadia. "We couldn't stand each other!"

Nadia confessed they would not have been friends in a normal situation, but were "forced to” because they had to work together.

Nadia continued: "When I got the job I said, 'What, every day with her!?

"And then we ended up being the best of friends, and how wrong we would have been."

But Nadia explained that once they started working together they warmed to each other immediately.

The loose ladies got so close that they were "joined at the hip" and moved in together in a flat in Manchester.

But relations would eventually sour when Loose Women relocated to London and Nadia left to start a family with partner Mark in 2002.

"It's mad to [talk about it] because we've never actually discussed it," said Kaye on the show in July 2016.

"I think we tacitly agreed to put it to one side. I was really hurt, it was really difficult, but it's like I was saying about friendships: you have to be able to stand back.

"She'd just met Mark and had (daughter) Maddy… she was totally absorbed in her world. There wasn't room for me at that time, and you have to accept that."

Nadia also opened up about the long-standing rift that resulted, admitting that she was to blame.

"It's so bad, but it was all about me. I started to get insecure about whether I was enough as a friend," the TV star confessed.

"I would think, 'oh she's so clever, and I'm just this…', all my insecurities. It's a thing of great shame in my life. It was years.

"One day I just text her and I said 'listen…' and she came straight back in the next second and she said, 'you have always been my favourite person in the world. Shall we meet up tomorrow?'"

Nadia and Kaye spent years not talking, but eventually they reignited their friendship and are now as close as ever.

When Kaye returned to Loose Women in 2013 after a seven-year absence, it was Nadia who helped her through some negative abuse she received on social media.

And these days, their friendship is stronger than ever.

Nadia said: "Most years we go to Spain for a few days, and all we do is talk 24/7.

"We usually have about five or six hours sleep, because we're talking all the time, so I have no doubt we'll be fine."

Although that doesn't mean they always see eye-to-eye.

"We do bicker. We are a bit like two old ladies sometimes," explained Nadia, before jokingly adding: "It's always all her fault, by the way.

"But I'm not worried about that. That’s the great part of it, hanging out with Kaye."

"We just get on in a very strange way," Kaye added.

"I don't know what happened, because outwardly, we're very unalike, but we just kind of rub along together.

"I mean, who knows? We may have a phenomenal set to and a fight. I don't think so, though.

"We do tend to just sort of complement each other."
