Loose Women's inaccurate Nottingham booze ban in parks claim as order has been in place for years

Nottingham was criticised by a Loose Women panel on Wednesday over claims the city had banned drinking in parks in response to recent crowding.

The panel were discussing the busy beaches and parks seen across the country during the recent heatwave.

Presenter Ruth Langsford said on the show which aired this morning: "At a park in Nottingham, a brawl broke out and we saw groups of students apparently ignoring social distancing rules.

"Now, the city of Nottingham has taken extreme measures and banned drinking alcohol in the parks there.

"Do you think this is something we might see rolled out? There are a lot of people out enjoying a drink or two. Is a ban extreme or do you think it is a good idea?"

But laws on drinking alcohol in Nottingham's parks have been in place for many years under public spaces protection orders (PSPOs).

This law and designated public place orders (DPPOs) prohibit any use of alcohol in public.

The law was most recently extended by Nottingham City Council in February last year, and will run again until 2023.

Denise Welch responded that she was "sick of banning and sick of judging".

It comes as two of Nottingham's beauty spots have been closed by the city council to prevent crowds gathering.

Entrances at Lenton Recreation Ground have been locked following chaotic scenes this week. It is also understood The Arboretum has also been closed.

Councillor David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council, told Nottinghamshire Live: "Drinking alcohol in public spaces is not permitted in Nottingham and will be seized on entry to our parks today.
