Loose Women star Denise Welch has opened up on the sadness she feels over her son Matty Healy, who fronts the popular indie band, The 1975. In a new interview, Denise has shared how difficult and sad it can be to be away from her son while he tours with the band.
The 65-year-old, also discussed her fears when Matty told her he needed to go to rehab for a heroin addiction, reports Chronicle Live. The former Coronation Street said: "I had to stand back and realise that Matty was the son of an alcoholic, and I had to come to terms with the shame that brought.
But Matty said, 'Mum, I wouldn’t be who I am if our house wasn’t a bit of rock’n’roll." Matty spent seven weeks at a rehab clinic in Barbados in 2017 to treat his heroin addiction and is still in recovery.
The lead singer has written openly about his drug use in songs. Although he still drinks alcohol and smokes cigarettes, he no longer uses heroin. Matty, 34, has recently found himself at the centre of a number of controversies, including accusations of racism, misogyny and Islamophobia.
The 36-year-old was linked to American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift in May this year. The two were rumoured to have been enjoyed a brief affair following her split from British actor Joe Alwyn.
One thing Denise did not speculate on was her son's rumoured romance with pop icon Taylor Swift.
