Kaye Adams has confessed that she lied to her eldest daughter about her age, a move she now regrets.

The Loose Women panelist, 59, fibbed to daughter Charlie that she was 10 years younger than she really was, only to be confronted by her after a schoolfriend Googled her.

Opening up about the incident in her column for the Daily Mail, the Scottish journalist - who is also mum to 15-year-old Bonnie - recalled: “Watching my little girl’s face fall into shock and confusion as I dropped into our chat what I thought was an insignificant, if not comic, confession — not to mention the resulting wave of shame and anger I rapidly felt with myself.”

The Scottish journalist came clean with Charly when she was 10-years-old and Adams was approaching her 50th birthday.

Charly told her she had got into a row with a friends at school about her mother’s age and accused her friend of lying.

Adams said: “It breaks my heart to know now that such was her trust in me that she convinced herself the internet was wrong.”

She said she had felt “ashamed of ageing” and was influenced by her own late mother, whose decision never to reveal her true age had been a running joke in their family.

Now approaching another milestone age, she has vowed to embrace turning 60 and as part of that, has signed up for the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Feeling under no pressure to win, she sees taking part in the BBC dance competition as a bit of fun.

She explained: “I realise now that I owe it to my daughters’ generation — and to my own — to embrace growing older, to redefine what it means to age as a woman in the hope that they never feel they have to shy away from acknowledging how old they really are.”

Strictly returns for its 20th series this autumn hosted by Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly.

Other celebrities so far confirmed include Five-time Paralympic gold medal winning swimmer Ellie Simmonds, Kiss FM DJ Tyler West, Bros singer Matt Goss, comedian Jayde Adams, Radio 2 host Richie Anderson, Hear’Say singer and soap star Kym Marsh, and former Hollyoaks actor Will Mellor.
