Loose Women air Janet Street-Porter's throwback Neighbours cameo as soap faces axe

Loose Women treated fans to a throwback clip of panellist Janet Street-Porter on Neighbours, as the Channel 5 soap faces the axe from schedules.

The TV presenter, 75, took a trip Down Under to make a cameo in the Aussie soap in 2019 - and her fellow panellists rewatched the appearance on the ITV show on Tuesday.

This comes after it was announced that Neighbours will be dropped from the UK TV schedule after nearly four decades, with Channel 5 saying it will increase investment in original British drama instead.

Janet’s appearance was part of the show's '20 before 20' challenge, which saw the Loose Women stars ticking off items on their wish list before the show's 20th anniversary in September 2019.

The clip showed Janet playing herself as she quipped to Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou) in the iconic Waterhole: “You Australians really know how to cut loose! You know what, I haven't been grumpy for four hours, that's a record for me!”

In the ITV studio after the clip played, Janet said it was “brilliant fun” to be on the Aussie drama.

She said: “I’ve got to be honest - I’m not the mastermind with all the knowledge about Neighbours, but I’ve got this mission in life to be in as many soaps as possible.

“So far I’ve managed to be in Hollyoaks at a wedding reception, I haven’t managed to be a body in Casualty, but I was very very thrilled to be in Neighbours.”

She continued: “I'm really sad that unless money can be found it’s just going to fizzle off our screens.

“It launched the careers of so many stars like Russell Crowe, Margot Robbie - me!”

The Australian soap has relied on Channel 5 for funding in recent years and pulls in an audience of over one million viewers in the UK across two daily showings.

Neighbours began charting the lives of Ramsay Street residents in 1985, and was shown in the UK for the first time the following year.

A Channel 5 spokesperson said in a statement: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

“It has been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we'd like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

“We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

“We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV
