Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson both played the full 90 minutes of England's 4-0 win over Andorra on Sunday.
Both started in midfield as the Liverpool right back was deployed further up the pitch and out of his preferred position.
Gareth Southgate's experiment lasted just 45 minutes before the 22-year-old swapped with Reece James and returned to right back.
Alexander-Arnold's performance earned mixed reviews from supporters on social media, with a number of people saying he was 'wasted' in midfield.

One fan said: "Trent looks lost in midfield."
Another tweeted: "This basically proves why Klopp prefers him as a RB. He gets more possession of the ball."
One supporter posted: "Trent looks a bit lost there, game passing him by a bit, but still has the quality to pull worldie passes out, shows he gets way more of the ball at RB like he does for us."
For some fans, they hope Sunday's showing puts an end to any debate over where Alexander-Arnold should play in the future.
England were 1-0 up at half-time after a goal from Jesse Lingard, but the Three Lions extended their lead with a dominant second half display.
Lingard found the back of the net once again as Harry Kane scored from the spot. Bukayo Saka was also on the scoresheet after a quickly taken corner from Alexander-Arnold.
Southgate's side face Poland on Wednesday in their final match of this international break.
