Maiko apprentice geisha admire plum flowers beginning to bloom at Kitano Tenmangu shrine in Kyoto. The enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane, is said to love plum blossoms, and the grounds contain about 1,500 trees. The shrine's plum tree grove will be open from Friday through late March, with the best viewing time for the blossoms expected to be around Feb. 25.
