The reason Nasa's space shuttle flew over Glasgow back in 1983

On June 6, 1983, Glaswegians gathered to look towards the heavens to catch a glimpse of a NASA space shuttle.

On that balmy summer day, NASA’s Space Shuttle Enterprise was seen 'piggy-backing' atop a modified 747 jumbo jet in the skies above our city.

After a flypast of Glasgow Airport (and other UK airports), the multi-million pound shuttle then made its way across the Atlantic to Florida following a trip to Europe which included a visit to the Paris Air Show.

And to the marvel of those watching from the ground below, the shuttle flew right over the city after passing over the airport.

That's because, included in the shuttle's itinerary, was for it to perform a low-level salute to workers at the Rockwell International factory in East Kilbride - the sister site of the US company who manufactured its special heat resistant panels.

With the company celebrating its first birthday, plans were hastily arranged for the shuttle to fly over the site in celebration alongside the airport.

Awaiting the flypast in East Kilbride were locals as well as two school loads of children and 64 staff, with the company having also prepared an enormous logo on the lawn to guide the jumbo over the proper flightpath to make the tribute.

But instead of the flypast, what they saw was just a brief dot on the horizon - more than 10 miles away.

The shuttle never made it to East Kilbride in the end, with newspaper reports from the day after indicating that it flew ‘way off target’.

Cue one cynical photographer at the time noting, "That thing has cost millions and millions of pounds. It's specially designed to be accurate within inches in space. And it can't even find East Kilbride."

Nowadays, the shuttle is based at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

And to see it flying low over Glasgow must have been an awesome sight for those lucky (and old) enough to remember it. One, especially young folk, will probably never forget.
