Looking back at Thin Lizzy's legendary visit to Bangor in 1974

Head down memory lane with us as we look back at when rock legends Thin Lizzy played in Bangor.

The rock legends took to the stage back in the Kings Club in the Queen's Court on a summer night back in July 1974. Not only is their concert fondly looked back on but their antics beforehand has left a lasting impression too.

Before their much-anticipated performance, the band decided to explore what the Northern Ireland town had to offer.

The 'Boys Are Back in Town' performers took to the harbour to soak in Bangor's stunning scenery which lead to the infamous photo of them being taken.

The image has been a source of inspiration as local Bangor artist Friz depicted the boat ride taken by the rock band as a colourful and eye-catching mural.

Friz told us about how Thin Lizzy's boat ride in the town became chosen as a mural, saying: "It was funded by the folk at Seaside Revival as part of a Bangor mural project curated by Seedhead Arts. Seaside Revival were really keen to have a mural that celebrated Bangor and its music scene, past or present."

There were a lot of contenders in the running for the mural but the rock band came up trumps in the end. Friz added: "There was a lot to choose from but we narrowed it down to celebrating Thin Lizzy. Location was a factor as there is another well-known photo that was taken at the time of the band walking past The Royal, which is right by the Rabbit Rooms where the mural is painted. The wall itself worked better with the composition of the photo taken of them in the boat".

Art is one of the most emotive ways of commemorating days gone by, and Friz's beautiful creation is a welcome addition to Bangor as the past can now be fondly remembered by locals and visitors alike when walking by Quay Street.
