Looking back at the site of a Halewood landmark which is now occupied by flats

Halewood has a rich history spanning centuries and is lucky to have many of its incredible landmarks still standing.

However, along the way the Knowsley town has also said goodbye to popular venues, such as the Derby Arms public house on Church Road.

The much-loved spot is now occupied by private residential flats - but back in its heyday the venue was more than just your standard pub.

Considered a landmark in the area, the local pub is believed to have been established for over a century and also rebuilt on the site during the 1930's.

Over the years, many residents would visit the Derby Arms for a casual drink or to celebrate special occasions with loved ones, such as birthdays and even reunions.

According to a story by the Halewood History Group, the field behind the pub was also said to be used as a venue for field days.

This included large parties for children from churches and other organisations around Liverpool who would take part in activities such as egg and spoon and sack and wheelbarrow races.

A picture, provided by Knowsley Archives, shows the Derby Arms public house prominently stood in Halewood around the 1920s, with a number of thatched cottages in the foreground.

Major events such as the 1937 Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was also celebrated at the pub.

The Derby Arms pub was demolished and replaced with a modern apartment block in 2015 but before then was one of the oldest public houses still standing in the area.
