Looking back at Singleton Park’s famous Party In The Park and the reason why it disappeared

It was a pop music extravaganza which brought the youth of Swansea out in their masses.

Chart toppers of the nineties and noughties hit the stage in Singleton Park - drawing crowds of up to 20,000 screaming fans.

Party In The Park, launched in 1997, attracted star line-ups that (believe it or not) once read like a who's who of the British pop industry.

Pop fans would dress in their finest summer wear, create banners professing their love to the latest heart throb and sing along to some of the catchiest tunes of the time.

In its first year, one of the groups to take the stage, was a little known all-girl band who within months became a household name.

All Saints graced the stage at the event and went on to take the charts by storm with hits like Never Ever, Pure Shores and Black Coffee.

The following year Steps nearly set the stage alight, quite literally.

Thousands of youngsters were stunned into silence when lightning struck the stage right in the middle the quintet's routine.

Technicians were able to restore power within minutes and the show went on.

Also on the bill that year were Clock - best known for their song Whoomph! (There It Is) - Swansea's very own Shah and One and One singer Maria Nayler.

The event was the brains of radio station The Wave.

Its senior controller Steve Barnes said: "We were able to have access to the acts in return for playing their songs

"We had many, many top acts including Steps, Daniel Bedingfield, Mark Owen and countless others.

"We'd start at 2pm or 3pm and go through until the late evening, and there would be 19 to 20 top chart acts all performing in that time.

"We were able to keep admission price relatively low to something like a fiver in the beginning.

He added: "We'd get 15-20,000 year on year and it was always very, very successful and it was a pleasure to do it for the area.

"There was not much going on in Swansea at the time, there were other events for different genres of music but there was not really a pop event."

In 1999, they lined up chart stars 911, Damage, Fierce, 21st Century Girls, Rozalla plus Tin Tin Out.

And the following year saw the likes of Liberty X, Sophie Ellis Bextor and boyband A1.

In the years that followed, there were some big names to appear, including Kelly Clarkson, Charlotte Church, McFly, Take That's Mark Owen, Daniel Bedingfield, X-Factor winner Shayne Ward and pop veterans Bananarama to name a few.

The last time the event was held was in 2007.

Mr Barnes added: "Even now in 2019 people say 'I still wish we had Party In The Park'. But unfortunately with the financial situation and the situation with the record industry, it would not be possible to do that now.

"We do not get access to artists like we used to. Record companies have merged together and you don't get that amount of artists offered.

"But it was a really proud feeling being able to pull something like that off and seeing the joy and happiness.

"My best memories is hearing that countdown which we played 10 minutes before the acts would come on and feeling that buzz seeing the crowd coming through all the entrances with everyone excited."
