Looking at Georgia versus Notre Dame’s historic ratings

The Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish battled for four quarters on Saturday night. The game became an instant classic. With much of America watching, the Dawgs held on to win 23-17.

In fact, the game had over nine million viewers. It’s certainly the top rated UGA game of the season and may be for some time. Nearly double the audience watched the Bulldogs than any other team last week:

CBS chose to air the Georgia versus Notre Dame match-up on prime-time over the LSU at Alabama game later this season. The game paid off for CBS in terms of ratings:

The SEC doesn’t have too many big-time match-ups in September. Auburn and LSU have played some memorable games in September as well as Florida versus Tennessee. CBS made the right decision based on the one-sided previous results of the LSU-Alabama series.
