"Look what you have made me do": Man punched girlfriend in face and bit her nose as 'tensions ran high' during wake

A 'bully' brutally attacked his partner while 'tensions were running high' after a wake.

Marcus Miller, 40, from Hulme, had been in an on-off relationship with the woman for 11 years, which was described as 'volatile'.

The couple, who have a seven-year-old child together, had been at a wake at Burnage Social Club on March 1.

Manchester Crown Court heard that the wake was being held after the funeral of one of Miller's close friends.

They were among the last people to leave the function, and had been arguing.

As they were leaving, the woman asked Miller whether he would be coming back to her house.

They did not live together all the time, and she alleged that he has not been faithful.

At that point Miller 'flipped', prosecutor Craig MacGregor said.

He grabbed her by the neck and squeezed, shouting at her.

They came to be in the car where their child was sitting and watching on.

In the car Miller climbed on top of her, still with one hand around her neck.

He then punched her to the face, and carried on hitting her around the head.

Mr MacGregor said that she began to feel faint, and that he then let go.

Miller then lent in to her, and bit her on the nose.

He stopped and then started repeatedly punching the steering wheel.

"Look what you have made me do to your eye," Miller said.

She suffered bruising to her face during the attack.

In a separate incident about a month before, Miller had used the woman's dressing gown to strangle her.

She had texted him saying she was turning her phone off for the night.

Shortly after, at about midnight, she heard a banging sound.

The doors had been locked and bolted, but Miller managed to enter.

He grabbed her dressing gown and used it to choke her, leaving her struggling to breath.

Miller then pushed her onto the sofa, and said 'look what you made me you do'.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said: "I have simply had enough. I am sick of living in fear and feeling like I cannot do anything without getting screamed at or battered.

Defending, Mark Pritchard said 'emotions were already running high' at the wake, and that Miller had lost 'a very close friend.'

"He made what he describes as a stupid mistake," Mr Pritchard said.

Around the time of the wake, Miller said two of his family members were seriously ill.

Miller has another child on the way with a different woman, the court heard, and now wants to 'change his life around'.

Sentencing, Judge Alan Conrad QC told Miller: "You are a bully who takes out your frustrations using violence towards women when you are angry.

"On two separate occasions you used nasty violence to a woman who is the mother of your child."

Miller, of Chevassut Street, Hulme, pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of common assault. He was jailed for 16 months.
