Look inside historic Koh-I-Noor now as Glasgow restaurant up for sale

When you think of the restaurants that over time have had the biggest impact on Glasgow, the Koh-I-Noor surely springs to mind.

Widely accepted as the city's first Indian restaurant, having opened up way back in 1964 on Gibson Street, the curry house quickly became a city institution and later moved to North Street at Charing Cross where it still sits today.

The Koh-I-Noor was famed for its cult and celebrity following, with the likes of Billy Connolly a regular diner, the Big Yin queuing up alongside us ordinary punters for the restaurant's legendary all you can eat buffet.

Sadly, after being run by three different generations of the family, the Koh-I-Noor announced its permanent closure shortly before the pandemic struck, in September 2019, leaving hundreds of loyal customers devastated.

But what now for the site of the Koh-I-Noor? Well, if you have a spare £525,000 lying about, it could be yours.

That's because the property is being marketed for sale and described as a "great opportunity" to breathe new life into the "iconic" location.

Agents CDLH Leisure & Hospitality Surveyors say: "The Koh-I-Noor is an iconic premises and Glashow's first Indian restaurant, established in 1964.

"This is a great opportunity to purchase a well-known institutional licensed property.

"The premises would be ideal for continued licensed restaurant use or other licensed concept.

"The bar, restaurant and basement space provide large areas and fantastic scope to introduce a first class offer."

The property listing, found here on RightMove, also includes photos of the premises as it looks now, no doubt transporting you back in time to the Koh-I-Noor's glory days. You can have a look around the current space in our gallery above.

And while in an ideal world we'd all like to see the Koh-I-Noor back in business, there's definitely scope for someone to do justice to the legacy of the historic location.
