Look inside Amazon's first till-free store to open in the UK from today

Supermarkets have been constantly evolving their health and safety measures throughout the coronavirus pandemic - from social distancing measures to increased limits on contactless payments.

Now, Amazon has launched its first grocery store in the UK without any tills at all.

The tech giant has opened the doors to its Amazon Fresh shop is Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre in London today.

Customers simply pick up the items that they need and just walk out their store, without the need to queue at any tills.

Shoppers scan a QR code upon entry into the shop, with cameras and other bits of technology tracking the items that people have taken from the shelves.

They are then charged for the items through an Amazon app on their smartphone.

The stores will be similar to the 20 Amazon Go stores the company runs in the US but will operate under the Fresh brand it uses for its UK online grocery operations.

Amazon’s London store will be the first of many planned to open up in the UK’s capital city.

Matt Birch, the former Sainsbury's executive who now leads Amazon Fresh Stores UK, said the company has strived to make grocery shopping "as convenient as possible”.

"The focus was just creating a really easy shopping experience for customers," he said.

"We recognise that UK customers want to shop in a convenient way so we really think they will appreciate being able to walk in and walk out with the shopping they need.”

The company said it has also launched a By Amazon range of hundreds of own-brand products for the stores.
