We recently did a piece ranking all of the Big Ten football stadiums by capacity, and of course, Ohio Stadium was near the top. In fact, the Big Ten has three of the top four stadiums by capacity in the entire country. Not only are there iconic venues, but the multiple 100K plus stadiums are some of the cathedrals of the sport.
But as big as those stadiums are, they pale in comparison to the size of the infield we’re going to see on Sunday with the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500. The official seating capacity at “The Brickyard” is 250,000, but many more can fit inside the infield with RVs, campers, and other recreational vehicles. In reality, nearly 300,000 people can take in the race in person when you factor in all of those in attendance in the massive infield.
But just how big is that infield? You might be surprised. In fact, it’s so big with a 2.5-mile track surrounding it, that you could fit every Big Ten stadium at once within its parameters.

This is crazy when you sit back and think about it. There are a ton of other landmarks you could use to illustrate just how big the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is, but it really hits home as a football fan.
The Indy 500 is set to run at 11 a.m. Enjoy the “greatest spectacle in racing.”
