Look: Grass field fully laid on tray at Las Vegas Allegiant Stadium

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will be the home of the Raiders once it’s complete. The construction is in its final stages now and the stadium is looking great.

One of the cooler aspects of the domed stadium is its natural grass field, which will sit on a tray outside the stadium on a day-to-day basis, and moved into place for game days.

If you’ve never seen a stadium with this kind of field, you might find this pretty fascinating. As of today, the grass has been laid on the tray, offering the first glimpse of what it will look like. Mick Akers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal tweeted out some of the first shots of the new grass field.

The tray on which the grass sits rolls under the stadium and up into place for Raiders and UNLV football games. It can’t stay inside the stadium because the dome is designed to block out much of the sun’s rays which the grass needs to grow.

It was important to the Raiders to play on natural grass, but playing in Las Vegas would make game days pretty sweltering a good portion of the year. This setup offers the best of both worlds.

Here’s a video Allegiant stadium put out showing the process.
