LOOK: Chiefs go with throwback Municipal Stadium end zone colors for home opener

The Kansas City Chiefs are going retro in celebration of the franchise’s 60th season and the NFL’s 100th season.

As the Chiefs prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens in their home opener, the ground crews are hard at work getting the field prepared for Sunday. That includes painting the end zones and the team helmet logo in the center of the field. This time around, the Chiefs are going with a classic look that the team hasn’t seen in many years.

Instead of the typical colors, the Chiefs are going with the throwback gold end zones. These were the colors that were often used at Municipal Stadium, where the Chiefs played from 1963-1971.

KCTV-5 producer Dante’ Jones spotted the grounds crew painting the grass with the throwback colors at Arrowhead Stadium today.

This will be the first time the Chiefs have used gold end zones at Arrowhead Stadium. In addition, the Chiefs appear to be painting the 60th-anniversary helmet in the center of the field. They typically have their Arrowhead logo there.

Here’s a quick comparison from a fan who noticed the potential changes earlier in the week:

It’s not yet clear whether this look will be used at Arrowhead all season, but we’ll at least get to see it for one game. This also might not be the only old-school look the Chiefs debut during the home opener. Perhaps the players will be wearing a new alternate jersey too?
