Loo-k inside the simple public convenience that took TEN MONTHS to build

They’re just under 33 feet by less than eight feet without any nod to architectural merit or beauty.

It took an incredible TEN MONTHS to build this utilitarian block of latrines on Barassie shore.

The Ayrshire Post just couldn’t resist road-testing the loos the world has been waiting for. So we plopped along last week just days after the Barassie lavatories finally opened for business.

Work had actually begun last March - no surprise then there was no gushing opening announcement from South Ayrshire Council.

The council had blamed the contractors, and the contractors blamed Scottish Water for the endless delays.

Meanwhile the public had to use the rather niffy portable loos out the back all summer

So were they worth the wait - or is it all a flash in the pan?

The obvious answer is no, nothing this size and nature can be worth waiting ten months for when big family homes can be built in less of a timespan.

But actually in the long run the 30 pence-a-go loos will be a huge relief to the cross-legged visitors to the beach.

The five toilets within the block include one with nappy changing and for the disabled. Reporter Stephen Houston is pictured above trying them for size.

And at 3.3ft by 7.8ft there is plenty of room to change in and out of your bathing costumes.

What’s more they all have an electric heater, activated by touch button.

The sink dispenses soap as well as a hand drier and the floor is of a quality non-slip variety.

There was plenty of loo roll and all were spotlessly clean.

Outside there is even a free shower, to wash the sand off you or even give the dog a hose-down.

The bottom line is hopefully the beach bogs will lure more summer visitors to Barassie shore.

Try them out for yourselves!
