Lonzo Ball on USWNT World Cup performance: It’ll be in history forever

The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) stole all the headlines across the country this summer with their incredible performance on the pitch in the Women’s World Cup. Their impact off the field has been just as impactful as their impact on the field as they’ve stepped into the spotlight during a player empowerment era in sports.

One of the signs of the impact the team has had is all the new eyes tuning into soccer. Amongst those new viewers was Lonzo Ball, who spoke about the team while on the red carpet at the ESPYs.

“It’s going to be in history forever. I don’t even watch soccer and I watched it. That means a lot.”

The USWNT drew record numbers of viewers for the World Cup final game against Netherlands on Sunday morning. In total between television and streaming audiences combined, nearly 16 million people watched the Americans defend their World Cup title. That figure is higher than last year’s men’s World Cup final between France and Croatia.

Seeing so many people tuning in and supporting the team will certainly do wonders for the sport and for the equality the team is fighting for.
