SAN DIEGO _ After 38 years with the San Diego Chargers, equipment manager Bob Wick relocated to Orange County in July to remain with the NFL franchise.
The long run has now come to an end.
"I can simply confirm that Bob is no longer with the organization," a team spokesman told the Union-Tribune on Thursday when asked if Wick had been fired.
The statement from the team came after an Associated Press reporter tweeted that the team has dismissed Wick, who worked the recent training camp in Costa Mesa.
Wick posted photos on his Facebook page chronicling his July relocation, paralleling that of the team's move to Orange County.
He reported leaving his Scripps Ranch house "for good" on July 14 and moving into a Mission Viejo house on the same day.
Training camp opened July 30 and finished Wednesday.
The team will open its season Sept. 11 in Denver.
The team's equipment manager since 2000, Wick was the NFL's Equipment Manager of the Year in 2009.
He joined the Chargers as a ball boy and equipment assistant during training camp in 1979 when Don Coryell was the head coach and Eugene Klein was the team owner.
The San Diego native and alum of Mt. Miguel High and San Diego State was named assistant equipment manager in 1983.
