Longford Town's Manley brothers laughed off stick from pals after sinking their local club Shelbourne

Longford Town's Manley brothers are out to take the Premier Division by storm after sinking their local club.

Full-back Joe and his sharpshooting brother Rob had to endure a slagging from pals when they KOd Shelbourne in last year's promotion/relegation playoff.

The pair grew up close to Tolka Park and were regulars in the stands over the years - so they took some stick when Rob's goal condemned Shels to relegation.

But Joe, 21, knows that it's all part and parcel of the game and he laughed: "Shels is our local club so we grew up following the League of Ireland, I think as everyone should do.

"We were semi-regulars down in Tolka Park, it was a great place to watch football.

"But obviously a lot of my friends are still Shels fans, all local lads, so we got a lot of stick. But listen, that's football isn't it? Me and Rob wanted to play Premier Division!"

The brothers are just two young guns in a youthful Longford side put together by boss Daire Doyle ahead of the new season.

Doyle said: "The average age in the league has reduced considerably. If you look back to the mid-2000s it was an older league and it has got a lot younger.

"If you use Shelbourne as an example last year, they went with a lot of experienced players and it didn't quite work out for them in the end.

"There are ways to go about it and it would be nice to get a mix of different ages. One thing that comes into it when you're looking at players is the budget you have.

"Our young players are hungry to succeed and show people what they're capable of."
