Longford man Ciaran O'Boyle died in New York while 'getting beer for pals'

A young Irishman was getting beer for his friends when he died after a suspected fall in New York, it is understood.

Popular Ciaran O'Boyle, from Co Longford, was found unresponsive by emergency services in Brooklyn on Tuesday night.

It's believed the 22-year-old, who studied at University College Dublin, had gone to a liquor store but never returned.

A source told the Irish Mirror: "He went to get beer for his pals but disappeared.

"His friends then contacted police concerned of his whereabouts, but were informed by officers his body had been found."

A 911 call was made after Mr O'Boyle was found lying unconscious on Gates Avenue. He was transferred to Woodhull Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police do not believe criminality was involved and that he may have fallen from an "elevated height".

The Irish Mirror understands he was on a holiday visa and due to come home to Ireland in the coming days.

Mr O'Boyle was to graduate at UCD over the next few months.  It's believed he had planned to start a new job in Dublin in September.

It's understood his parents are flying out to New York to formally identify his body. His body is expected home next week.

An NYPD spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: "Police responded to a 911 call of a unconscious male in front of 880 Gates Avenue within the confines of the 81 Precinct.

"Upon arrival officers observed a 22-year-old male unconscious and unresponsive.

"The male had to trauma to his body consistent with falling from an elevated height. The investigation does not appear to criminal and remains ongoing.

"The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death."

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is aware of the incident and are "providing consular assistance".
