Longannet power station blaze tackled by firefighters after demolition explosion

Demolition experts have set off a huge controlled blast at the old Longannet power station.

Charges were used to blow down the site’s disused east bunker bay, previously used to store coal.

The residual coal dust saw a huge dark plume of smoke rise over the area while a fire then broke out on the roof of another building.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 2.47pm on Thursday, June 6 to reports of a fire at Longannet Power Station.

“Operations Control mobilised six fire engines to the scene, where firefighters were met by a small fire involving felt located upon the roof of a building.

“Crews currently remain on the scene working to extinguish the fire.”

The old power station is situated on the north bank of the Firth of Forth.

At one time Longannet was the largest coal-fired power station in Europe.

It opened in 1973 and eventually closed in March 2016 as ScottishPower looked to reduce the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere with the company aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050.

With demolition work still ongoing, over 28,000 tonnes of material removed from site so far, with 98.5% of this being recovered/recycled.

The site is due to be transformed into a train manufacturing plant by 2021.

More than 1,000 jobs are set to be created at the site by Spanish company Talgo.
