'Long story short' - Graeme Souness is convinced Liverpool will retain Premier League title

Graeme Souness remains confident that Liverpool will see off the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City to retain their Premier League title this season.

United have closed the gap at the top and are currently second in the table, only trailing leaders Liverpool on goal difference.

City - runners-up to Jurgen Klopp's men last term - are seven points back in eighth place, though have a couple of games in hand.

“City will be like Liverpool right now, thinking that if they win their two games in hand and they’ll be a point behind by being nowhere near their best," Reds legend Souness told Sky Sports.

"I think Liverpool would definitely say that, they’ve not shown the consistency that they have for the last two or three years.

"They’ll be thinking that they’re top of the league and they’ve not really found that consistency.

"So, they’ll be looking for that in the second half of the season.

"I still make Liverpool favourites, when push comes to shove, they’re stronger, they’re more of a team and they have special players. They don’t rely on one area for goals."

United are on a fine run of form in the league but Souness believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men will ultimately miss out on the title.

"I think Man United, typical Man United, if they get on a roll which they’re on, they take some stopping," he added.

"We always felt like when I was playing that the media got behind them, which helped them. I think they’ll come up short."

City, meanwhile, have missed their all-time leading scorer Sergio Aguero due to injury for much of the campaign to date.

"For City, I think (Gabriel) Jesus is a really good player but he’s not the fox in the box, he does the hard yards more than Aguero does, but he’s not gonna get anywhere near the same amount of goals," said Souness.

"Unless they get someone to replace those goals, I see them coming up short.

"Long story short, my team will retain the title.”
