Long-serving apartment residents in Tallaght left 'torn apart' after they were handed eviction notices

A hospital worker in South Dublin has described his complete and utter disgust to find that he would be forced to leave his home after nearly six years.

A number of tenants in Tallaght were handed eviction notices and informed that they would have to move out of Exchange Hall in Belgard Square.

The floors which were served with the notices are occupied by families and workers in Tallaght University Hospital.

One of those tenants being evicted is Ian Healy, who has worked in the hospital as a porter since "day one".

Dublin City Council respond to claims that Crumlin complex has been neglected and left in 'disgraceful' condition

Ian told Dublin Live: "I was served with the eviction notice in the middle of January and I have to leave my apartment by July 1.

"The letter says June 30 but it also says I have the whole of the next day too."

Sadly, this surprise eviction did not come as a shock to Ian who "knew in his heart" that something like this was a possibility.

"I knew it was only a matter of time. I live in a two-bed and I am paying just over €1,000.

"It's a very low price when you compare it to the rest of Tallaght. The same two-bed could be rented out for as much €1,700."

He is not the only one who is currently in this predicament with eight other tenants having being served with notices also.

He continued: "Nobody wanted to talk about it. If we had found out about each other's stories, we could have come together quicker.

"I thought it was just me, then my next door neighbour told me that they were leaving before me, having received a letter in November."

Ian added that he experienced "shame" receiving the letter and was terrified to talk about it with anyone.

He said: "The word 'evicted' makes it sound like you've done something wrong."

"I'd consider myself to be an ideal tenant. I'm a very quiet individual and the location was perfect for me as I work next door in the hospital.

"I have recommendations from other landlords too. It has honestly tore me apart."

Ian isn't the only hospital member who will have to find another place to live.

Other members who are being evicted include theatre and pediatric nurses.

He continued: "There are two elderly nurses who were handed notices.

"They have been living there for well over ten years. They pleaded with the agency to let them stay for another two years until their retirement."

He concluded: "As bad as my situation is, I have a large family who could take me in. I have somewhere to go but they have nowhere, their whole community is Tallaght.

"And now we are counting and praying on the community to help us fight against this."

A beautiful 'dream' Dublin house worth €375,000 is up for grabs for just €100

Patrick Nelis of Dublin West Housing Action has been giving advice to those affected by the news and has said that they will continue to fight this until the very end.

He told Dublin Live: "I met with tenants on Friday and I met with them on Sunday again to discuss the legal side of things.

"I believe that this is just another way for them to get around the 4% rule."

The apartments of those handed with eviction notices are currently on the market as an investment property.

The price is only available on application and the sale is being handled by McPeake Auctioneers.
