An Ayrshire COVID-19 vaccine drop-in centre has been overwhelmed today as residents eagerly snapped up first jabs.
The Dreghorn vaccination centre was welcoming anyone over the age of 18 to head along – but stewards were turning some folk away at 3.45pm saying the queues were "too long".
The village was almost at a complete standstill due to traffic lined up out on to the main road, combined with motorists diverting due to the A71 to Irvine being closed.
One person who travelled from East Ayrshire in an attempt to get a vaccine at 3.50pm told Ayrshire Live: "It took me over 30 minutes to get from Kilmarnock to Dreghorn due to the traffic.
"When we got there, we were queued out onto the main road; then we were told queues would be over two hours, closer to three, so we should try another day."
Some people who took advantage of being told to just turn up and get a vaccine have saluted the hard-working vaccination teams.
Julie Richmond, in a post on the Irvine Herald's Facebook page, said earlier today: "I've been here for almost an hour. Line is massive, but it's great to see so many coming out to get the vaccine."
A statement on NHS Ayrshire & Arran's Facebook page said this afternoon: "The drop-in vaccine clinic at Greenwood Conference Centre today is currently very busy.
"If you are planning to attend please be aware that there may be a lengthy wait. Our vaccinators are working really hard to see everyone as quickly as possible, so please be patient.
"In the next few weeks, all 18 to 39 year-olds in Ayrshire will be offered appointments, so if you can't get your vaccine today there will be other opportunities. Thank you."
