Long queues as McDonald's serves customers for first time in weeks

Fast food fans caused traffic chaos this week as they queued to get their first taste of McDonald’s in weeks.

The chain opened its drive- thrus in Livingston and Bathgate at 11am on Tuesday and hungry locals descended, causing lengthy delays around both restaurants.

Police officers helped to direct traffic as queues in Bathgate reached from the drive-thru on Whitburn Road up to The Steelyard and ended up having to turn away some cars.

But workers coped better than in other sites around the country which had to close again as they couldn’t keep up with demand.

McDonald’s said it had reopened several sites with new measures in place to help keep employees and customers safe.

It said its franchisees are working closely with local authorities and the police to determine if it becomes necessary to close drive-thru lanes if queues cause disruption at busier sites or put employees or customers at risk.

McDonald’s also said social distancing has been introduced in the kitchens and service areas, perspex screens had been installed at drive-thru windows and employees would wear PPE.

Contactless thermometers will be used to take employee temperatures on arrival at work for every shift and restaurants will return with smaller teams, offering a limited menu and operating reduced hours.
