Long lost Glasgow summer scenes from the Clyde Coast in the 1950s

Summer is in full swing in Glasgow, and it was around now when most holidaymakers flocked ‘doon the watter’ to for a break away.

That tradition, some argue, has all but disappeared with more and more Glaswegians going abroad for their vacations.Whether it was enjoying the activities on offer at Butlin’s in Ayr, or sunning yourself on the beaches of Dunoon - everyman and his dog headed west back in the day.

Escaping the cramped city for a short while, those who could afford it enjoyed a trip away to relax and wind down. Typically, it was the Glasgow Fair, also known as Fair Fortnight in July, that saw Central Station bustling with families ready to hit the beach.

Sadly, Fair Fortnight has fallen out of fashion for most and the mass exodus that we once saw no longer exists. If you’ve heard your Granny wax lyrical about these days but couldn't quite picture it we’ve collected some snaps from Glasgow's coastal holiday heyday.
