(Picture: )Jazmin Sawyers’ Olympic training was so intense she has only managed to see her runner boyfriend twice this year — once when they bumped into each other in America.
The long jumper, 27, who is based in Loughborough, was kept apart from Guy Learmonth by lockdown, as he lives 240 miles away in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Then the Atlantic came between them when Sawyers — a world, Commonwealth and European medallist — started her build-up for Tokyo 2020 at a training camp in Florida.
She said: “It’s great having someone like Guy who understands. We don’t get too much time to spend together. We crossed paths in America. Guy’s never going to be the person who tries to convince me pop up at the weekend when he knows I’m training. We’re both trying to achieve our dreams.”
Sawyers and Learmonth, 29, who is Britain’s 800-metre indoor champion, also saw each other in March at a European championship in Poland.
However, Sawyers says cannot wait to “kick back” on the sofa with the Scot reading a book or watching TV.
She had to “turn lockdown on its head” to look for the positives when Tokyo 2020 was postponed for 12 months.
