Long-haul flight declares sudden emergency over Ireland as passengers vent frustration

A long-haul flight from Germany to the US diverted to Shannon Airport on Tuesday after declaring a medical emergency.

Flight UA47, headed from Frankfurt to Houston, declared the emergency off the north coast of Ireland at around 3:30pm.

After a short loop, the plane landed at Shannon Airport.

A spokesperson for the airline said: "United flight 47 (Frankfurt-Houston) diverted on 3 August 2021 to Shannon Airport due to a medical emergency on board. Medical personnel met the aircraft on arrival. Subsequently, the crew reached their maximum duty time and the flight was cancelled. We provided our customers with meal vouchers and hotel accommodation. The aircraft has since departed Shannon Airport today at 1:12pm local time."

Passengers from the flight were stranded in Shannon until lunchtime today with one labelling it the "worst flying experience I’ve had".

The furious customer said: "Stuck on the ground in Ireland for 6 hours on UA47, the plans keep changing, first it was to do to DC then Houston because of crew times, now it’s deplane here and see you tomorrow…

" @united this has been the worst flying experience I’ve had. I understand why we landed…But there is zero communication and zero regard for the customers you have on this flight that need to make arraignments on what to do tonight. Now we’re being told to stay on the plane, and wait for another decision."

Updates to follow.
