Long Eaton: Schools on lockdown with kids kept inside after armed police rush to house

Armed police have put an area close to schools on lockdown in Derbyshire as officers descended on a home.

Witnesses told Derbyshire Live that police brandishing guns and an ambulance are at the scene in Long Eaton.

Two nearby schools are keeping children inside as the incident unfolds, and a police cordon has been put in place.

A worried mum said: “I’ve just seen armed police holding a gun at someone or a car. It scared me and my daughter.

"I’ve asked police if we are safe and they told me as long as we keep away from the cordon.”

Police are using drones in the emergency operation, although it is not yet clear what the nature of the incident is.

Derbyshire Constabulary wrote on Twitter: "Armed officers are currently at an address on Briar Gate in Long Eaton. We are speaking to an occupant at the address and there is currently a cordon in place.

"People are asked to avoid the area as there are traffic delays."

The force had tweeted an hour earlier, at 8.20am: "We are attending an incident on Briar Gate in Long Eaton. Please avoid the area as there are traffic delays. We will provide further details when we have them."

A local resident at the scene, who did not want to be named said: “There’s police everywhere. I think they’ve been here all night but I don’t know why. It must be something serious.”

A message sent out to parents of children at Wilsthorpe School reads: “There is an ongoing police incident in Long Eaton.

“Students will be kept inside the school building behind the secure line until we receive further information.

“Please do not visit the school. Update to follow.”

A spokesperson at Harrington Junior School, which is also nearby, said they could not comment on the incident but confirmed the pupils were safe.

They said: “We are still open. We have got the children.”
