A Filipino cyclist taking part in a long-distance event was killed when his bicycle was hit by a van that ran a red light in Chachoengsao province.
The Facebook account of organisers Audax Randonneurs Thailand on Wednesday reported the death of Russel Perez, 55, from the Philippines, in Muang district Chachoengsao, on Tuesday.
The accident occurred about 1.30am on Tuesday at Hua Noen intersection in Ban Pho district.
A van that went through a red light hit his bicycle, according to the organisers. The van sped off after the accident.
Perez died while being taken to Ban Pho Hospital.
Perez was taking part in the non-competitive 1000BRM long-distance rally from Suvarnabhumi airport to Trat. Contestants had to complete the 1,005 kilometres first leg, starting from Suvarnabhumi on Saturday, to Trat and then pedal back to the starting point and finish on Tuesday.
Perez had only about 50 kilometres to go to finish the event.
Audax is a non-competitive sport, with events in many countries. Success in an event is measured by its completion.
Audax Randonneurs Thailand is a long-distance rally open to all cyclists, according to thaimtb.com, a website promoting cycling. Participants must follow a map showing the route, receiving a stamp at designated points. Night cycling is allowed, but cyclists must have all required safety gear.
"Before the ride, he [Perez] had arranged the proper equipment, which met the safety standard strictly required by the organiser," Auday Randonneurs Thailand said.
