Long Covid vaccine wait for people in their 20s as timeline and dates finally released

Younger people in their 20s can expect to receive the first jab of the Covid-19 vaccine at the end of August or in early September, it has emerged.

The HSE has finally shared a timeline for the youngest cohort currently eligible for vaccination.

It comes as people aged 36 are being invited to register online for their vaccine on Wednesday as the programme continues to roll out.

HSE officials have said if supply holds up, they expect to give 300,000 people a jab per week over the next three weeks.

Damien McCallion, Ireland’s national lead on the vaccine rollout, said on Monday that Ireland has great stability with supply at the moment and so this will be a very busy time for vaccinations.

He recommended that people take their vaccination appointment when they are offered it so the rollout maintains momentum and that majority of people will be protected against the virus as soon as possible.

It was confirmed that 900,000 doses will be delivered to Ireland within the next two weeks.

Among those will be Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines which will land in Ireland between June 23 and 30.

However people in their 20s will be waiting until the end of September until they will be considered fully vaccinated under the current plans.

It comes after autumn booster jabs and vaccines for under 16s were also formally approved at this week’s Cabinet meeting.

Ministers were also told about millions of additional doses of approved vaccines for administration in 2022 that are also on the way.

A Government spokesman briefed political reporters on what the ministers were told about jabs.

He said: “Minister Stephen Donnelly got Government approval for a purchase agreement for 1.8million doses of the Moderna vaccine for use in 2022.

“He also got approval to exercise an option for an additional 1.1million doses of the Janssen vaccine for delivery in 2022.”

It was not revealed how much these vaccines are costing us as the government spokesman said this is “commercially sensitive” information.

He added: “Cabinet heard significant progress has been made in the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine programme.

“Scientific advice indicates that variants will continue to evolve and that vaccine immunity is not indefinite - and vaccines should be extended to persons under 16 years of age.

“Therefore, it is considered likely that booster shots will be needed for a very high proportion of the population over the coming months and next year.”
