Long covid clinics for virus sufferers launch across Bristol

Long covid assessment clinics are to be set up across Bristol - to help those suffering with the long term effects of the virus.

Research has found that one in five people with coronavirus can go on to develop longer term symptoms including brain fog, anxiety, depression, breathlessness, fatigue and other problems.

Long covid affects people in many different ways, with an understanding on how it can be managed still evolving.

Now, the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Clinical Care Commissioning Group is taking referrals from GPs for people whose Long Covid symptoms are significantly impacting how they are able to function in day-to-day life.

They are also working alongside other partners across North Somerset, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire to develop advice and support using digital resources and working closely with GPs.

The need for specialist support for those still encountering issues after recovering from the virus was first identified during the first wave of the pandemic.

The service aims to continue to support people who are suffering with the effects of the virus for three months or more with their ongoing needs.

Referrals to the service are made by the patient’s GP.

Sirona associate director for specialist services Ceridwen Massey said: “We have been involved in the development of the national guidelines around Long Covid, as we were at the forefront of recognising this was a need for people following the first wave of the pandemic.

“With our commissioners and other partners we have designed and begun delivering this new service across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire over the last few weeks.

"It is aimed at supporting people who are likely to need ongoing rehabilitation or have other health and care needs following Covid.

"These are individuals who are experiencing symptoms for 12 weeks or more.

“Referral into our physiotherapy-led assessment centre is made by GPs, and we are signposting to a range of options including self-management within our community services – and also within partner organisations – to support people with their recovery.”
