A Dumbarton pensioner – who suffered with agonising loneliness – has told how humble he is after his story moved dozens of residents and spurred them into action.
Bob Gray, 82, has emerged as the unlikely hero of the Lennox Herald’s Lonely This Christmas Campaign.
The campaign comes to an end this week, having helped a lifeline befriending service gain much-needed new members.
A total of 27 big-hearted members of the public took action and contacted Benview Resource Centre in Dumbarton to offer their services after reading how befriending gave Bob a new lease of life.
Every week, two befrienders brighten his days by coming to sit in with him or take him out for the afternoon.
Speaking this week, Bob said he is really pleased with the reaction telling his story has had.
He told us: “I’ve had quite a few people who have read it and mentioned it to me.
“My neighbours have mentioned it, as well as the newsagents and grocers where I go.
“My befriender Anne was telling me that Benview have had plenty of interest since it went in, which is great.
“It only takes an hour out of people’s week which isn’t very much at all and it makes such a difference.”
Delighted Bob added: “Between the Lennox Herald, Benview and myself, we’ve done good.”
The former firefighter from Dumbarton told how this time of year is really hard for him and many pensioners, who have lost ones.
He continued: “I miss Issy so much, especially this time of year. You watch the TV and see families all happy and celebrating together.
“I find it difficult this time of year.
“I have two great next door neighbours who will be bringing me a Christmas dinner so I look forward to that.”
