Lonely cats looking for love: shelter at capacity

The Hunter Region RSPCA shelter at Rutherford has reached overcapacity and is reducing adoption fees this week in an effort to find forever homes.

Until Sunday, April 25, adult cats over six months have been reduced from $180 to $100 and kittens from $230 to $150.

As of Monday, the Rutherford shelter has 226 cats in care, with 36 cats and kittens ready for adoption right now. The rest must remain in care until they are made available for adoption.

All adoptions include desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, vet checks and up-to-date parasite control.

The shelter has about 50 cats that are stray/impound cats (the shelter operates as an impound facility for Hunter councils and high intake periods drastically put pressure on the shelter).

As of last Friday, more than 650 cats and kittens were in RSPCA care across NSW, with only 117 available for adoption. The remaining cats and kittens were undergoing processing procedures such as vet checks, surgery and desexing procedures, or rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the shelters continue to see high numbers of cats coming into care through Inspectorate operations, strays and impound and emergency boarding.

The adoption fees do not cover the cost of the procedures and treatments, but the RSPCA says the best welfare outcome for the animals is to reduce their shelter stay times and find them homes.

Alternatively call into the shelter at 6 Burlington Place, Rutherford.
