Londoners most likely to work at home and not check on neighbours

More people in London are working from home during lockdown than in any other part of the country, official figures reveal today.

Londoners are also the least likely to have checked on their neighbours and the least aware of the Government’s “stay at home” order during the pandemic.

The findings came in the first detailed regional breakdown of responses to lockdown from the Office for National Statistics.

Almost 61 per cent of workers in the capital said they were working from home during April, way ahead of the 50.4 per cent in the second placed region, the South East. In the East Midlands just 32.6 per cent worked from home.

In London only 15.6 per cent of households reported reduced income during April. This was second only to the North East on 14.4 per cent and compared with 21.1 per cent in the West Midlands.

However, London ranked as the least neighbourly part of Britain. Only 48 per cent said they had checked on their neighbours at least once in April, compared with 64 per cent in the South West.

Londoners were the most likely to have felt lonely at least some of the time during the lockdown, with 26 per cent experiencing loneliness in April. The national figure was 22 per cent and the lowest 18 per cent in the South East.

Single adults living alone were the most likely to report loneliness, with 39 per cent saying they felt that way.

Londoners were the least aware of the Government’s order to stay at home order during lockdown, with 22.7 per cent saying they had not heard of it.

In the West Midlands only 10.1 per cent were not aware.
