Londoners flock to Reddit to share what they would include in Tube etiquette 'rulebook'

Londoners have taken to Reddit to share what they would include in a Tube etiquette ‘rulebook’.

Commuting to work in the capital can be a stressful affair, so frustrated Londoners have put together some advice for using the London Underground.

Issues ranged from moving down the carriage to carrying bulky bags.

One Reddit user said: “Have a bulky bag? Take it off. This counts for both backpacks and big ladies handbags – if it’s crowded, your big bag is taking up extra space and needs to go down by your feet.”

But for another, the main problem was being stuck behind people when leaving the station.

John Luther said: “If tapping your card has resulted in ‘seek assistance’ twice in a row. SEEK BLOODY ASSISTANCE. Don’t stand there tapping it again and again twenty times whilst a giant queue forms behind you.”

Others questioned whether it was polite to ask people to move further down the carriage during peak times.

One person said: “Don’t shout ‘move down please!’ and variations when no one can move down into this apparent space you think we have.”

One person shared their embarrassing Tube experience with another passenger, saying: “I once lost it and said ‘f****** where? Only to be pressed against the offending person for the rest of my journey. Super awkward.”

Another suggested that people should make room behind them when getting on the train.

Roy Badami said: “When you get on a train, make room for people behind you. Trains don’t stop long, and there’s very likely to be someone behind you who wants to get on too.”

TfL launched the Look Up campaign earlier this year (Transport for London)

Earlier this year TfL introduced its look up campaign asking those on the tube to look around for people in need of a seat.

However many Londoners thought they might need reminding in the rule book.

Zhuckzhang wrote: “If a heavily/obviously pregnant woman boards the tube (such as wearing a TfL badge) then please don’t read your Metro/watch your phone/’sleep’ but offer her a seat. Look up at each stop.

“The same applies to anyone who looks elderly, frail, distressed, etc.”

Another person agreed, adding: “If you do see someone wearing a badge (even if you're standing and not in a seat) ask them if they want to sit down and see if you can get the priority seat freed up.”
