London weather: Thundery showers set to bring more misery to commuters during Tube strike

Thunderstorms are predicted in London on Wednesday, bringing further misery to commuters during the week-long Tube strike.

Underground workers who are members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime And Transport Workers (RMT) are currently staging a five-day walkout in the capital, lasting until Friday morning.

Union barons are locked in a dispute with Transport for London (TfL) over pay and working conditions, forcing many Londoners to work from home or find alternative ways to commute.

The capital’s roads have been noticeably more congested during the industrial action, as workers seek alternative modes of transport to reach their desks.

Thankfully, London has been blessed with sunshine and above-average temperatures over the past few days, creating perfect conditions for walking or cycling to work.

However, those planning to walk, cycle or wait for the bus are now advised to bring an umbrella or waterproof jacket, with heavy showers and thundery showers predicted.

According to BBC weather there is a risk of thundery showers at peak travel times of 9am and 5pm. Heavy rain is predicted by the Met office at various other times of the day.

Experts say this unpredictable weather is due to a series of low-pressure systems from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Met Office said: “Tonight will start cloudy with the odd shower. During the early hours, a band of showery rain will approach from the west, heavy at times closer to dawn.

“Tomorrow morning will see variable cloud and scattered showers. Turning cloudy from the west in the afternoon with showers continuing, but a band of showery rain is expected to move in by evening.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the forecaster added: “Thursday is expected to see sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy and thundery, especially in the afternoon.

“A drier day on Friday, with sunshine and a few showers, these mainly in the afternoon.” Temperatures in the city are expected to hover around 20C (68F).

Towards the weekend, the Met Office said it is keeping an eye on Storm Amy, the first of the 2025/2026 storm season, to see whether it will affect Britain.
