London weather: Second heatwave only days away after brief pause to sweltering summer

A second heatwave is set to arrive just in time for Wimbledon - with temperatures expected to creep back up to 32C.

Despite a wet start to Tuesday, BBC Weather has forecast temperatures above 28C for four days from Saturday and believes there will be uninterrupted sunshine throughout the start of next week.

It comes after two wildfires broke out in London on Sunday amid scorching temperatures at the weekend.

London Fire Brigade scrambled dozens of firefighters to the blazes in Enfield and Feltham, where they used backpack blowers (which work like leaf blowers) to push flames back into already burnt areas.

Saturday was the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures rising to 33.2C in the village of Charlwood, just northwest of Gatwick.

An official heatwave is recorded in London when the mercury hits 28C for three consecutive days, meaning the capital could see its second heatwave of the summer next week.

It means tennis fans will be able to bask in the sunshine on Henman Hill, also known as the Murray Mound or Raducanu Rise to younger enthusiasts, at Wimbledon.

Meanwhile, Glastonbury revellers can expect a mixed bag, forecasters have warned.

A Met Office spokeswoman said the Somerset festival will get off to a “bright start” when its gates open on Wednesday, “with sunny spells and scattered showers expected throughout the day”.

More than 200,000 people are expected to descend on the fields of Pilton as the British Summer gets fully underway, with ticket-holders advised to prepare for mainly warm weather, but to also bring waterproofs to the five-day event which could see thunderstorms over the weekend.

Back in London, the Met Office has predicted sunny intervals throughout the week, with temperatures in the high twenties.

It has predicted that temperatures will creep up to 30C on Sunday and has posted a one-word forecast on its website for Monday: “Sunny”.
