London weather: Milder temperatures to return next week after cold snap

Londoners waking up to sub-zero temperatures on Thursday shouldn’t crack out the hot water bottles as the capital is to experience milder weather up to 10C next week, according to the Met Office.

Temperatures in the capital plummeted to -3C on Thursday, a stark contrast to the warmest New Year’s Day on record last week where temperatures reached 16.3C in St James’s Park.

But the Met Office is predicting a return to milder temperatures over the weekend and into next week.

According to the forecaster, the cold snap experienced in London today will continue into Friday but will then be displaced by warmer air from the west.

“There’s a milder feel coming to the weather,” a spokesperson from the Met Office said.

“It will be a bit colder tomorrow, but only around 5C. Over the weekend, westerly systems will be coming in bringing milder but wet weather on Saturday.

“It will be brighter on Sunday with some gaps between the showers, and expect more showery and mild conditions into next week.”

According to the forecaster, Thursday night’s minimum temperatures will be 1C, with mostly clear skies but scattered cloud and isolated showers towards the west. There is a chance of frost in more rural areas.

The BBC weather forecast for the capital has predicted a return to milder weather into the weekend, possibly reaching 12C on Monday but dropping to 8C later in the week.

Colder conditions are expected to remain further north in the UK. Earlier in the week the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for north Scotland, with predicted delays to road, air and ferry transport amid blizzards.
