London weather: Met Office issues yellow rain warning for weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain set to hit London this weekend.

The weather agency’s “be aware” alert was issued on Friday morning and is in place between 3pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday for much of England .

While there is no named storm, the Met Office has said there is potential for the rain to cause disruption to public transport.

“[There will be] spells of rain, some heavy, [which] will push east across most areas through Saturday and Sunday, some disruption is likely,” a statement read.

“Bus and train services will probably be affected with journey times taking longer.

“Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer.

“Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely [as is] some interruption to power supplies and other services.”

Saturday will see highs of 14C and it will be 15C at the peak on Sunday. There are not any weather warnings in place for the UK for the rest of the week.

In addition there have been 75 flood warnings and 262 flood alerts for the weekend.

There may be “quite a lot of low cloud, mist and fog developing during the night as well as turning fairly murky for many of us”, said Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey.

Londoners enjoyed exceptionally mild weather on Thursday with the capital seeing temperatures in the high teens.

The Met Office recorded 18C in Teddington shortly after midday.

Forecaster Craig Snell told The Standard: “While not record-breaking, (Thursday’s) temperatures are definitely on the higher end of the scale, with it feeling a lot more like spring than winter.

“This will be a welcome reminder that we only have two weeks left of winter, spring is just on our doorstep.”
