London weather: Met Office issues warning as capital to be battered by heavy rain

Pack your umbrellas, London is set to be hit by torrential rain later this week.

The Met Office has released a “yellow” alert warning for Thursday as heavy downpours are expected to hit the south of the UK including the capital.

It comes after London was cloaked in an eerie, thick fog this morning.

The weather warning means there could be disruption to travel, and flooding is possible in some places, as well as strong gusts.

Between 15-25 mm of rain is expected in the affected areas, although up to 50 mm of rain could fall in places, most likely “over the Downs”.

The Met Office said: “In addition, the rain will be accompanied by strong winds, with a chance of gusts approaching 60 mph on exposed southern coasts, and 40-50mph possible inland.

“Rain will clear to the east by the end of the day.”

The warning starts from 9am tomorrow and lasts for 12 hours.

It covers Cornwall, Plymouth, Bath, Brighton, part of Wales and the outskirts of south London such as Slough.

In central London, rain is predicted as very likely to fall for most of the day tomorrow. Wind gusts will reach up to 18mph by the evening.

By Friday though, the capital will finally see some sun.

Yellow Met Office alerts mean that the weather will have a “low impact”.
